Jihadi Warlord of Pakistan: A Look at the Pakistani Taliban’s Newly Crowned Leader Maulana Fazlullah
Fazlullah is described as one of the most violent and ruthless militant leaders of Pakistan, with a hardline interpretation of Shari’a. Notorious as “Mullah Radio” for running an illegal radio station in the Swat and Malakand regions, Fazlullah is a warlord in the truest sense of the term. He is charismatic and powerful with staunch followers (Fazlullah has a private army known as Shaheen Force), successfully challenges the government and rules over a swathe of land from which he extracts natural resources for financial gain. Fazlullah ruled over the Swat valley and nearby areas with brutal armed intimidation. During his rule, a traffic intersection and landmark known as “Green Square” in Mingora, the capital of the Swat district, was dubbed khooni chowk (Bloody Square) because Fazlullah and his armed militants used the square to execute abducted soldiers and civilians who defied his rulings.
